It stems back to the Boston Tea Party dude - attitudes are hard to change - Freedom Fries ought to help you understand that frame of mind. Ever since that time tea hasn't been on the menu and they all forgot how to make it! The only tea they really drink in the US is what they call "iced tea" which is only badly made tea served cold- EW! you have to add your own sugar and lemon and it is impossible to get it to taste good. Now if you want a good cup of tea come north to Canada!

You can't. There is no good tea here at all, especially restaurants. American's arent much of tea drinkers. If you find a good high end grocery, you may find some suitable tea.

Because we're coffee-oriented people here! You want a good cup of coffee? Come to America and you're sure to find one. Want a good glass of iced-tea? Great! We can do that. Want a nice, warm cup of hot tea? Go to the UK or somewhere where they know how to make a good cup of tea, 'cause the US sure doesn't!
Sorry about that...

Because we don't really know how to make it. Most are unaware of steeping or loose leaves. My grandmother was from Glasgow, so she knew her tea making. Most American don't have a clue. They dunk the bag up and down a few times until the water turns color and many Americans think that's good tea.

Hot tea is not as popular in the US as the UK or China. We drink it as a cold beverage mostly. I do like a cup of hot tea in the cold weather. I just steep a couple of bags in a small pot of water and put sugar in it. It's really good when the weather is icy! I don't EVEN ask for it in restaurants.

I live in California and get my loose tea from Berry Bros. & Rudd, Fortnum & Mason/USA or I buy Williamson & Magor bags at the local market. The sad thing is that I descend from Joseph Pearse Palmer who participated in the Boston Tea Party. Oops!

Not enoug Americams drink tea for restaurants to learn how to make it right. They give you tepid water with the bag on the side and call it tea. Might as well pour it back in the horse! Learn to drink coffee in American restaurants and make your own tea at home where you can do it right.

You must not be American.
Our tea is fine for us. We are more Coffee drinkers than Tea Drinkers.
There are stores that get "English Tea" or even "Chinese Tea" if that's what you're into.
But resteraunts? They just get the cheapest stuff they can. Lipton, etc.

Do what my wife does: she brings her favorite tea with her and has the waitress serve her up a cup of hot water.
