The internet is like a whole bunch of libraries calling each other up and sending books and magazines to each other. Anyone can publish a book, but someone has to tell the libraries where they put the book on the shelf.

Show them a road map. The Internet is like the Interstate and small road and hwy system. All of the buildings, everywhere, would be like the sites on the internet.
The World Wide Web is all of the main routes and building combined.

I would describe it the same way I did when I first got my computer in January 2003. "The internet is a place that gives me access to all of the libraries in the world."

Think of Internet as a connection of Telephones - All telephones with everyone available at all times, so that you can talk to anyone, anytime, at your convenience. The only difference is, instead of people at the other end, these are computers talking.

The internet is like a huge encyclopedia of knowledge, but instead of it being a book, you just go electronically online through the computer.
The internet is a world of knowledge. At the same time, you can shop online and get everything you ever wanted at just a point-click away. You can purchase things cheaper and get it delivered to your door without ever having to leave your house.
The internet is your information highway. Whatever you want to learn and discover and whoever you want to talk to...its just a click away.
