A Honda Shadow would be ideal because sits low to the ground, plenty of power and well balanced. They are usually about 5000.

Start with a mid size bike for the type that you choose, and don't buy a Harley (sorry, not as a first bike)

Mid size would be:
Cruisers - 600 to 800cc
Sports - 400-600cc but avoid race replicas
Touring - 700-900cc
Dirt - 400-600cc

All of these should be easily available for under $6000

I would also advise getting on an intensive course to get a full licence first as you will be taking the test before getting any bad habits.

Give it a couple of years and you will outgrow whatever you bought if you ride it regularly. Then, choose from any bike including a Harley.

Used Honda CBR 600 or equivalent. Maintenance free, good ergonomics, good brakes, design suspension etc. Make sure you take an MSF class, ALWAYS wear gloves, boots, helmet. Make sure it has good tires. The advances in technology for your "boots" is incredible and will save your skin.

Somebody mentioned an HD. I wouldnt advise a cruiser style bike for a first bike as the design engineering is obsolete. They "go straight great." It is the stopping and turning that is lacking - and they are heavy. When you get the Honda, take off the faring and buy some inexpensive bolt on sliders. You WILL inevitably dump the bike on a manhole cover, leaves etc in the rain or some other mistake - and these sliders will save you $$$. Unfortunately US drivers are poorly educated to watch for anything other than a bigger vehicle - so learn to observe your environment like a hawk.

Mad Scientist is on the right track. But....sad to say YOU might consider it a dorkmobile. If you do, consider the 500 Ninja.

Whatever you do, don't get any sport bike larger than that. It'll probably kill you. Be patient, put in your time on a starter bike, and THEN go for one of the big boys.

Since you're a 16-year old boy - or younger - I'm assuming you'll be wanting a sport bike. If not, stick with a 750 or smaller street bike. There's a ton of them out there.

And promise us that you'll take the safety course.

Any brand...Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki, Harley, Indian, etc...with a 500 cc engine. It will be the right size for a 16 year old, still powerful enough to boot it, but not to overpowering for a novice. Buy the best helmet you can afford to go with it. No sense suffering brain damage when you do something stupid for the first time.

How about a Ninja 250? Costs half of what you're looking to pay, can easily do 100, and is a pretty forgiving bike to learn on.

Summer is correct . The bike you are looking for is the Shadow.

Butt bandit is a freakn' cager who doesnt know that a Sportster is not a suitable first bike.
