In a nutshell, as a coach, you will develop a closer relationship over a longer period of time with many of the students and really be able to impact their character. It makes for really long hours, but I highly recommend it.

Sorry but I've got to give the readers digest version (I'm a teacher and a coach). I've got to cruze-got to be with a group of ball players in 25 min's.
All the normal stuff that people say-parents, fans, etc. are all part of the job. What I did not like, and at the same time helped lots, is; with most kids you have built in respect (coach AND teacher-oooh), however, sometimes when things are not going too well (mostly parents) carry over their philosphical differences from sports into the classroom.

Got to go.

Well there are a lot of positives and i hope you ignore the negatives.

+'ives
-Spend time with students you may not normally
-Stronger bond with students you have
-You can 'use' the extra position as the coach to your advantage
-Some parents may get to know you through this and be helpful
-You are providing the students with an oppertunity to play a sport (and keep out of trouble)
-Looks good on your resume and with the principals etc
EDIT dont forget rewarding!

-'ives
-Some parents can become real jerks around athletics and this can cause problems for you professionally (though rare)
-More work
-May require time on non-school days
-May require some input of money on your part

I love my coahing. I teach in the elementary so coaching a varsity sport is a definate change of pace at the end of the day. With coaching you get a different relationship with students and I personally feel I can make more of a difference. I also feel that I get the opportunity to see kids that can struggle and be problems in the classroom sore when they are given athletic opportunities.

As for the negitive - swim season starts tomorrow. My husband keeps kissing me and saying that he looks forward to spending time with me again in March. (After boys season). I also go into work 2+ hours early most days because I can't stay after to work in my classroom and who wants to go back after a 3 hour practice?

It is a huge juggling act, but I love it, and it makes me feel like I'm making a difference with my time.
