I know that when I was growing up my parents discouraged using
the left hand. I never really knew why, they just did. However, when my kids were born I did not attach a stigma to the use of the left hand. I have 4 children and two of them are left handed. The increase in left handedness could very well be due to allowing the child to choose either hand.

The following in an excerpt from Left-handed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :

In Britain, around 11% of men and women aged 15-24 are now left-handed, compared to just 3% in the 55-64 age category. A number of factors may be driving this increase:

Left-handers were severely discriminated against during the 18th and 19th centuries and it was often "beaten out" of people.

In adulthood, left-handers were often shunned by society, resulting in fewer marrying and reproducing.

As discrimination was reduced in the 20th century, the number of natural left-handers who stayed left-handed increased

Everybody I know is right-handed except for me; and I haven't noticed more left-handers than usual (but I haven't been looking).

I do have a theory, though: I suspect that there's the chance that left-handed people may be more intelligent and/or creative; and I have noticed that babies and young children do seem more intelligent and/or creative than babies and young children used to be. Therefore, if both premises are correct therein could be the explanation to any increase you have noticed.

Then again, maybe not.

I think more people are left handed. Apparently 9% of the population are now laft handed but I remember years ago it was 7%. Don't know why I remember that, it's just one of these useless pieces of information I've been carrying around for years that I've finally found a use for.

Did you know the Greek word for left handed?
It is aristocrat.
The Latin (Roman) word was
sinister.

I like the Greek one better :)

By the way there was a study showing fetuses exposed to ultrasound were statistically more left handed than fetuses not exposed. They used it as an indicator that ultrasound was dangerous to neurological development.

because in the old days, a natural left hander was made (forced) to use their right hand instead. today we let kids do whatever comes naturally.
