'Pneumatic' are good and robust - like a Henry.

Steer clear of Dyson - they just fall apart, overheat or blow up.

I have a Nilfisk and it has never let me down. I have had it for 10 years or more. I also think that the type of vac depends on the area to be cleaned. How often it is cleaned, the traffic etc.
Diferent strokes for different folk. People tend to want to believe that their vac is best because they spent good money buying it and to admit you bought a bad vac would be a no no. I have heard that the Dyson is the best. I have never used it as it is too expensive for me. I'm happy with my Nilfisk.

Depends on if you have carpet or hard floors. If carpet, get an upright. If hard floors, get a canister. Bagless seem to wimp out faster than regular vacuums. Make sure that you get one that will not be too heavy.

Sorry I don't have a brand name for you. You can do a search on amazon.com to compare and contrast different styles and models of vacuums, and you will get customer reviews too.

I personally love the oreck XL. It's light, easy maintenance, and can get under places others vacuum can not. You may want to fumble through a consumers report to see a description and additional details that will suit your needs.

Dyson. With 3 Labradors in a small house, I'm constantly vacuuming and it gets up every scrap of hair and dust.

Miele. Made with quality in Germany!
We have had our Miele Flamenco for about 12 years now and it is holding up very well! The suction is great, the motor is quieter than most and it has plenty of options and add-ons for any job. Lightweight too! :)

A Dyson for me! No messy bags to contend with. Cyclonic action picks up everything and it easy to use.
