Many stories abound (see source info for background)...there was visual contact between shipboard crew members and IAF pilots shortly before the attack. Given the wartime environment, there was probably a lot of miscommunication, as well as some defensive posturing by Israel. It is unfortunate this incident occured, but as we all know, in wartime, almost anything can and does happen, whether deliberate, accidental or both.

SSHHHH!!! It was supposed to be made to look like the Egyptians did it. They even went as far as to shoot at the American soldiers trying to escape on a life boat. Luckily, some survived and were able to tell their stories. Otherwise, it would be another US Marine Barracks bombing lie.
