whats the typical symptoms of a oil pump failing

A lower than normal oil pressure. I don't know what a 4.3 (GM?) V6 typical oil pressure would be. Also, listen very carefully when you start up. If you hear clicking (as you might right after first startup after an oil change) then it could mean a weak pump having trouble pushing oil through the engine. If you don't have an oil pressure gauge, you might need to take it to a shop and have them check it for you. The pressure might not be weak enough to trigger activation of the light.
