Two ways will work.

Either add the whole numbers and the fractions separately (if that's easier for you). Then put them together. Remember the expression '5 1/3' effectively means '5 plus 1/3'. And order doesn't matter for addition.

So
5 1/3+ 2 5/6 = 5+2+1/3+5/6 Which is 7+ 2/6+5/6= 7 7/6= 8 1/6

Or you can convert the whole fractions to improper fractions, and then add them like you would any fraction (w/ common denominators.).
5 1/3= 16/3 = 32/6
2 5/6= 17/6
Together that's 49/6= 8 1/6

I think I might prefer the first way, b/c it gives you an estimate for the total right away. An estimate is often useful. It's also easier to make a mistake when converting a large improper fraction (like 49/6).

Be careful. It is simpler to add (or subtract) mixed numbers as, well, mixed numbers. You still have to find a common denominator but the simplification at the end is usually easier.

5 1/3 +2 5/6
= 5 + 2 + 1/3 + 5/6
= 7 + 2/6 + 5/6
= 7 + 7/6
= 7 + 1 1/6
= 8 1/6

Note: The largest number used here is 8.

If you were to change both mixed numbers to improper fractions, then the numbers (numerators) start getting big once you multiply to get your common denominators.

5 1/3 + 2 5/6
= 16/3 + 17/6
= 32/6 + 17/6
= 49/6
= 8 1/6

Note: The largest number used here is 49.

This seems so backwards to me. Why would anyone create work for themselves if there was a simpler way?

Woo, I'm first!
Well, to add fractions you need a common denominator [bottom number] First, change these mixed numbers into improper fractions
5 = 15/3, 5 1/3 = 16/3
2 =12/6, 2 5/6 = 17/6

Our new problem is then 16/3 + 17/6
we multiply top and bottom of each fraction so bottom numbers are the same
3*2=6, sooo......
16/3 * 2/2 = 32/6 <- bottom number is now 6, same as the other one!

16/3 + 17/6 = 32/6 + 17/6
add numerators [top] 32+17=49
Keep that same denominator for an answer of 49/6
This can't be reduced, but we can divide 49/6 and get 8 remainder 1, for a final answer of 8 1/6

5 1/3 + 2 5/6

First convert this mixed number to a improper fraction

16/3 + 17/6

Multiplying 3 times 5 = 15 + 1 = 16/3 and 6 times 2 = 12 +5 = 17/6

32/6 + 17/6

using six ( 6 ) as a common denominator. 6 divided by 3 = 2. 2 times 16 = 32

32 + 17/6

49/6

8 1/6

Dividing 49 by 6. converting the improper fraction to a mixed number.

The answer is 8 1/6

First change them both into fractions

5 1/3 =16/3
2 5/6 = 17/6

Then you need to find a common denominator in this case is 6.

Because you doubled your bottem number on 16/3 you have to double your top number so now you have

32/6+17/6.

You add the top two together: 49/6

then divide the top number by the bottem number for you whole number

8

You have one left over so that becomes the top number of your fraction.

Your answer is 8 1/6

Hope this helps!

using calculator.or let it be the improper fractions first and later change the 5 1/3 into 32/6 and now you can add it! the answer is 49/6

you need to change them into just fractions first so it would be 16/3 + 17/6, then you need to find a common denominator (the bottom number), which would be 6, so 16/3 would be 32/6, because to make the 3 a 6 you would multiply the bottom by two to equal 6, so therefore to keep it equal multiply the top by two, then you add them, 49/6, then simplify, 8 1/6 is your answer.

5 1/3 + 2 5/6

5 1/3 = 16/3
2 5/6 = 17/6

(16/3) + (17/6)

Multiply everything by 6

(32/6) + (17/6)
(32 + 17)/6
(49/6)

ANS : 8 1/6
