if you've had good tips from african americans...then why does your title ask why 'african americans' are bad tippers? that's a contradiction.

but to answer your question. not all african americans, canadians or europeans are bad tippers. perhaps its your service. or maybe the restaurant that you work in.

for certain you can't work in a lower end restaurant and expect to collect a tip that's equal to that if you worked in an upscale eatery.

i for one tip extremely well when i dine out. and my friends do the same. however if we do receive horrible or inadequate service we don't feel as obligated to fill up our servers pockets with our hard earned money when its obvious our needs as customers wasn't taken seriously.

bad service
lack of money
bad service
Here's how I tip. 2 cents if they are really rude. 10 % if they provide basic service. Less if not. 15% if they provide good service. 20% if they are perfect. The waitress the other night was nice, attentive but not pestering us. But she brought the ticket while we were eating right after we got our food. People were waiting for tables. What this tells me is we are expected to eat and leave. Don't order pie. The waitress is busy, so either get the ticket early or maybe have to wait for it later. Etc. That knocks down a 20% attitude to a 15% tip. You gotta make them feel welcome.
PS don't forget hospitality and to treat everyone the same.

Well as for Europeans, in most European countries the tip is included and you only leave a little extra. Thats why they don't leave much because they don't realize this. This is also why in Europe the waiters like Americans who dont know this either... and leave 15%-20% ON TOP of the gratuity included. lol

you are generalizing. i am WASP and i am probably
considered a bad tipper. why? because when food
was 'all you can eat for$1' a 10% tip was considered
right. that added up to a dime. now food is at least
$10 for a half decent meal and $1 is considered a bad
tip. like it or not that is what i pay.

Tipping in my opinion is a bad use worldwide, people who work for an organization must be well paid by his/her boss in order to avoid the unpleaseant moment to the clients to live a tip on a dish, on the other hand, in some way it is a sort of humilliation to your server, u never know how much is enough and that unconfortable feeling makes you feel unfair with yourself and you host, some times makes fill you so bad for not to be back again

Cause they are all cheap, they view waiters as cheap low income poor people.
I was a waiter I never received tips from Africans. I did get tips from canadians and europeans though.

I worked at the Melting Pot.

As a young person, I do tip well but I find myself being given poor service frequently because it is assumed I will not give a good tip. Poor service = bad tip as far as I am concerned so maybe it's partly your fault for assuming you won't get a good tip? Just a thought...

But also it is a different culture and I know that like in Europe tips are frequently calculated into the bill and they aren't used to adding it on themselves.

I have never been a server (Thank God), but I know that they only make about $2.15 or $2.50 an hour, which is why I always tip at least 15% , but I guess to others, it depends on the service and the quality of the food, usually it is the servers fault if you get cold food, I know the cook didn't make it cold.

In a lot of european bars, especially irish/scottish, it's custom to NOT tip. Bartenders are paid very well and it's almost seen as an insult to tip.

Canadians tip well for GOOD service. Mediocre service gets you a mediocre tip. Try saying 'you're welcome' when a Canadian says 'thank you' instead of your standard 'uh huh'. Try acting like you are happy to serve them, that is, after all, your job. Don't walk slowly around and make it look like you are doing them a favor. Better yet, go to Canada and learn how to be a proper waiter/waitress.
