dc united rocks. mls deserves some respect. too many people say its a crappy league which it is not. it just doesn't have the same spark and imagination as other leagues. it does have a lot of solid players though. dc united is making a run at improving the league with some great play and funny goal celebrations with eskandarian. with some more time mls will get there and then maybe a category will come up.

What MLS needs to do to improve the status of the league as a whole is to:
1. MLS teams need to sign good players.
2. Have a second and third division. Even if they have to merge with USL. That would make teams play hard to move up the latter, generating better soccer.
3. Top MLS team should participate in the Copa Libertadores da America. South American's version of the Champions League. This tournament is nowadays much more than just a S. America tournament, with top teams from Mexico participating in it. The winner of that tournament plays the winner of the Champions League at the end of the year in Japan.

Lot's of great answers to your question. Basically, I think it is due to the greater popularity of the established leagues throughout the world and the fact that most of us Americans don't find the appeal (I wish they would).
I think MLS is using the best approach by starting small and gaining popularity slowly. NASL tried to be major league right out of the gate but it's lack of popularity had a direct influence on the operating costs of teams that signed great international players.
I hope I see the day when we have a league that operates much the same as the premier leagues. I don't go for the typical set up with geographic divisions and nearly every team making the playoffs (in the other major sports).

cause MLS is more like a minor league. Minor League Soccer.
most top players that did play in the MLS from Europe like Hagi, and Valderama came over when there career was almost over and it was easier for them to play in this league.

Because it doesn't deserve a separate category.
Spanish Primera Liga is probably the second best league in the world, yet doesn't have a separate category
