Why is it that some people do not want someone/something, but they do not want other to have it either?

I have never understood this, whether it be exes, or job promotions, etc...
Can someone tell me the reasoning behind this, besides pure spite?

When a person has had a bad experience in the hands of someone or something, they wish that person or thing to do badly. Hence, the victim doesn't want someone else to have it, 'cos something good might happen to the person who hurt them.
It's psychological.
