Democracy is the bes tway but when I read through the answers and questions left on yahoo, I realise how ignorant, uninformed and sometimes unintelligent people are.
Democracy works as a principle when everyone is extremely well informed, logical and intelligent.
but just how informed logical and intelligent is the average person?
then realise half the people are stupider than that!
and you realise how flawed things are.
When you throw into the mix the immense propaganda from the media, politics and hear say how can we ever hope to have a normally functionin society.
I am surprised how ignorant people are!

No system of government is without flaws.
Peaceful coexistance is predicated on keeping the majority of people content.
Democracy's great flaw is also its greatest strength.
It builds consensus and peace through cooperation and compromise. It gives everyone a more or less equal stake in the peaceful and orderly running of society.
Unfortunately, it gives EVERYONE, no matter how stupid, a say. The opinion of the fool has the same weight as the voice of the sage.
All you can hope for is that the wise somehow out manouver or out shout the fools most of the time.
If you think people are so stupid, your job is to make the system better despite them, thus proving you are in actuality their intellectual AND moral superior, not just in theory.
Being smarter is not enough.
You have to build something positive to have any righteous sense of superiority.
BTW the world has never been run by the most intelligent people. The hardest workers, the driven are the greatest movers and shakers. Most smart people I know (myself included) are classic underachievers. We talk and plan but rarely DO.
What are you?

First of all, what is normal? What kind of government do you think would be better? There is no utopia anywhere. True, there have to be capable leaders in the govt.(I'm not talking about party affiliation Rep. or Dem) A society is made up of those who can lead and those who can't, those who have more education than others(however, you don't have to be highly educated to have common sense and be a positive part of a functioning society.) There will always be somethings about the govt that we don't agree with or don't like. I think if we had an opportunity to experience places who do not have a democracy we would realize(not r-e-a-l-i-S-e) just how fortunate we are. Most of us hear how people in other counties live, but not until we actually experience the kind of life they live, will some people appreciate what they have. I would rather have some honest, upstanding, trust worthy uniformed people in a society than some of the educated and informed who can not be trusted. There will always be some of both in a society.

No, a real democracy is not the best way. That is why there is no true democracy in existence. If there was, everybody would vote on every matter and the majority of votes would decide the issue. No government does that. It would be too inefficient.
So, we create other forms of government like a Republic, where we vote for representatives to decide these issues for us. Ideally, this representative is smarter than the average person and can be trusted with such issues. The real joke is when the representative ends up being of lower than average intelligence!

You are of course right . As you point out some of the answers, show that some people ar not able to understand a non partisan ,non aggressive statement.
Fortunately ,someone flexible enough to accommodate various shades of opinion has a better chance of election. As long as they can also give the impression of implacable confidence in 'The Right Viewpoint '!
As far as the two rapists go . If a country of say 60 million people had 40 million who thought that way ,it'd be time to leave ,whoever was making the laws ! But it's true ,various minority groups are barely better off under most democratic system than a dictatorship.Especially persecuted are those who retain close contact with natural ways of living . Generally they are considered primitive and their lifestyles effectively made illegal.
Those people are exactly those who we need most ,now that 'civilisation' threatens the survival of the species.

Democracy works astounding societies that fee individuality like ours. which does no longer make it the great. In cultures that fee nationalism (china), communism works astounding. In societies that fee spirituality (iran) theocracy works astounding (even in spite of the undeniable fact that iran is kinda undesirable at it). the in hardship-free words authentic democracy contained in the international is Switzerland, the position guidelines are surpassed at the same time as a petition for a particular regulation functional aspects X volume of signatures. of route, in small international places like switzerland, it particularly works splendidly. in spite of the undeniable fact that in a tremendous usa of thousands of tens of millions of human beings, like the U. S., democracy is ineffective and undecisive. regrettably a democratic republic is the great equipment we've arise with thus far. nevertheless extra effective than a dictatorship. Communism is extra helpful in idea, disasterous in practice. And rather a lot another variety of authorities is a dictatorship in a unmarried style or yet another.

If it is a democracy, the only thing wrong is the Orwellian "some people are more equal than others", it seems that today the people we elect do listen to the opinions of the people, but then totally ignore them and do totally the opposite.

First we need to define "What is democracy?". Because in each society, democracy has its own meaning. While democracy defined by one country might be very attractive for its people, it could be insane in view of other country's people. So I think first of all, we need an internationally approved definition of democracy and then decide if it is good or not. But is it easy to get to such a definition?

Are you saying we should all be part of a Muslim State because we are misinformed about the word of Allah and need to be enlightened.
you should think about the extreme potential that your statement brings up before dumbing on democracy. Democracy is set up so that the majority opinions are carried out although not necessarily the best ideas, but who defines best. Lets voe on it and find out.

It depends on who you ask. Democracy has been working OK for us for a relatively short period. But you must also consider that the first democracy was in ancient Greece where the population consisted of 70% slaves. I would say that democracy in ancient Greece worked great for the 30% of population that were not in slavery.

The founding Fathers realized this as well which is why the US is a democratic republic, not a true democracy. Unfortunately the only thing most of our politicians are interested in is getting re-elected so they pander instead of doing their job and doing the right thing.
