Well, running under the assumption that mermaids exist...

If you believe in the mythological sirens of Greek mythology, you find them near rocky shores, where they sing out to passing sailors and lure them to their doom. If you prefer the story of Alexander the Great's sister, Thessalonike, you'd find her in the Aegean Sea, where she would surface and ask you of the fate of Alexander, and if you told her anything other than "Alexander lives and is well," she would turn into a gorgon and destroy the ship and the entire crew.

If you're looking for a mermaid-like creature, head to Florida -- it is believed that the manatee or dugong in the Everglades area may have been mistaken for mermaids throughout history (you have to use your imagination a bit, because a manatee looks nothing like, say, Darryl Hannah) There is also a congenital condition known as sirenomelia, in which a child is born with legs fused together and reduced genitalia. This condition is usually fatal within a few days of birth due to abnormalities in the internal organs, but there have been a small handful of known survivors of this condition alive today.

The only other way to find a mermaid is in popular culture.

Well, you could use your imagination and pretend you found one. Mermaids don't really exist, unless she's like Bigfoot and the Lochness Monster; only a select few have ever seen them. And they truly believe they exist. Since we can't prove they don't exist, you can say you found a mermaid at the lake closest to your home. You could dress up like one, or if you're a male, get your girl friend to dress up for you and you really would have found a mermaid (in costume.) There's plenty of books with mermaids in them, toys, movies, etc., about mermaids if you just really are infatuated with them.

Go on a worldwide sailing trip by yourself and experience no sex or human contact for several months.
Believe me your mind will surely conjure up mermaids, serpents and all of the creatures that Ulysses encountered.
