Really, it's a pretty old computer by today's standards. Anything you do to it will be money better spent on a new computer.

However, this computer will support an Ethernet card, which will cost you about $30 or so. If you have access to an Ethernet connection (such as on a DSL or cable modem), you will get MUCH faster Internet speeds. However, it won't help you at all with dialup speeds. If all you can do is dialup, that is your bottleneck and you'll have to change that (by getting DSL, cable data service or satellite data service) if you want faster Internet.

If you just want a faster computer, consider upgrading your display (video) card. A new $50 video card will make your computer feel much faster, especially for gaming or other visual applications.

If you don't know how to install cards in your computer, you will have to depend on a friend or pay someone to install them. If you have to buy an Ethernet (or Wi-Fi or video) card and pay for installation, then you will be spending too much money on this older computer. A new computer for $350 will be so much faster that you'll wonder why you didn't upgrade sooner. And Windows XP is much better than Win98SE.

In no particular order

1) Uninstall any unnecessary programs

2) Check thoroughly for spyware and viruses

3) Defrag/Disk Cleanup

4) Delete all temp files

5) Make sure you have no more or less that 128 MB of RAM

6) Get rid of it and get a newer system and a broadband connection LOL

you should be able to defrag your system through the control panel, click proformance and maintance, then click on free up space on your hard drive.

If this does not work try this:
right click the start
click explore
right click on Local Disk (c:)
click on properties

If you do not have much free space try to delete unused/unwanted programs by going to your control panel and click add/delete programs

after doing this be sure to empty your recycling bin

By doing all of this your machine should run faster.

But keep in mind that dial-up is always slow.

If you want faster proformance is suggest that you switch to broadband.

Pack as much RAM as you get into it. Also, uninstall any programs that you don't need. If you are good with computers, you might get some good use from a light Linux distribution like Puppy Linux or DSL (D**n Small Linux).
