If "vampires" are really supposed to exist, why are they mostly in the west?

Almost all of them are in the goth subculture?

Talkin about these modern "vampires." You know, the ones that claim some virus converted them or they inherited some way or another.

actually if you want to get techinal about it they are more than likely all in the northern, and europe areas because in america they are praised but they actually don't wish to have that much light shed on them. They want a place to be hidden from the world because tehy hold what the human nature wants more than anything, immortality. Gothic culture is a more simple culture than that of a vampire, goths are more of the wannabe's to vampires. the reason tehy try to stear clear of this area is because we have broadcasted the ways to destroy them in everyway possible so they are truely in danger here.

West, like the Western hemisphere, or in the west, like California? Dracula cowboys? Like Jimmy Angelove in _Practical Magic_?

I guess because we love movies and are inspired by them. The vampire myth like in Dracula was Bram Stoker's invention and it was popular here, leading to lots of spinoffs. Of course, in Transylvania, there's a lot of vampire tourism, but that's a recent phenomenon fed by tourists who wanted to know about Dracula and Vlad the Impaler. It's not traditional there.

Technically, other cultures do have vampire myths, but the traditional myths aren't like the goth-type myths in the States. It's taste and culture, I guess.
