It's because the obtain dirt (through the years) on every one in positions of power and make sure they know it.
They also see how few people actually get fired for some of the biggest howlers known to man. It's in the employers interest for these 'mess' ups not to become publicly known, so bury the mistake and promote the offender out of harms way.

I've been in the security industry for 15 years. Recently another company took over the contract and we officers had a choice to continue where we are or go with the old company to a job with less pay. (some option- right?) With the promise from the new company that nothing will change for us i.e. vacation time, seniority, pay ..... 99% of us stayed. 5 months into the new employment the district manager said there was a discrepancy with my hire date. I asked what that was. She said they would only honor the time from when I started at the contract I'm at now rather than the full 15 yrs. that they promised. This cuts two years off my seniority and reduces my vacation time from 4 weeks to 3. Not to mention that even after the best evaluation I have ever had, I still haven't had a raise in 2 1/2 years!! It's very easy to become indifferent about the job now... oops, sorry, they call it a career- although in a career you actually advance. There are no opportunities for advancement where I work. Maybe some of the people you are working with have experienced similar situations. I am looking for a new job now.
Good luck to you and have a great day!!!!

Some of these old farts still think the concept of tenure, tribal knowledge (things you only learn thru being with the company and can't easily explain to a newbie) and senority actually have pull in today's economy that is ruled by the all mighty dollar. They will get theres when there is a layoff and all that matters is salary. If you've been with a company for 10+ yrs it probably goes w/o saying that you are overpaid for what you do and some fresh new kid on the block can do your job (that they barely do anymore because they got lazy) for less and do it right the first time. Just hang in there and laugh. Cuz that day will soon be upon those geezers.

It's human nature for people who have senority or have been at a place for a while to think of themselves as superior to the newbies and take advantage of them. And it's understandable; if you've been working at a place for 30 years, wouldn't you feel like you own the place? It's why seniors in high school pick on the freshmen, and it's the same in the workplace.
The best thing to do is not to worry about it, and go about your business as usual and do your job well. The longer you're at your job, the more respect you'll get.

first, they have experience & they have colleagues they have been with so there is this pack & power & experience thing there. they know when to stop when playing with the breaks & lagging around.
you're new and still getting used to the job, getting use to mixing around colleagues. there will be an opportunity where events like D & D or company lunches where you can get to know them better. soon, you will understand all jobs are like that. and you'll see yourself behaving like them a little.
take your time, youre new, you find responsibility a big issue. sometimes taking things too seriously won't help too.
