This is not a religious tradition but we do that out of Habbit
When you are engaged you wear them in your right hand , the third finger after ur thumb ( counting doesnit include the thumb ) and when getting married transfer it to the left hand in the same finger .
They are mostly gold 4 women and silver 4 men

Its not compulsory that if a muslim guy gets engaged he has to wear a ring.
But if he does wear in the case if it is gifted to him by his in laws then it would be a silver ring mostly coz wearing gold is forbidden for muslim men,and there's no fixed finger for that though.
But girls are mostly gifted engagement ring in gold or diamond and they wear it on the ring finger of their right hand.
Nowadays rings are exchanged in both muslim girls and boys,but boys usually have a silver one and they may or may not wear it as it is not compulsory to wear.
