May idle but lack power when taking off or operating at road speed. In 25 years I have not see but a hand full that were ever clogged up. Can cause engine overheating. You should never remove it. If bad replace. many cities test the exhaust emissions and it will not pass and you will not get an inspection sticker until the car is fixed. Good rule of thumb, if it was not needed the manufacture would not have installed it to start with. If it came with it keep it in good working order.

yeah infact I had this problem last year at first the car will act really sluggish and than it will act like it doesn't want to shift because it doesn't build enough pressure to allow this and the worse it gets the slower the car will want to go also as in one of the other answers you will have almost no exhaust one possible way to check is to take the pipe off at the headers and see if this helps it will be really loud and I don't recommend this for a long time as it will cause other problems with your engine if it is the catalytic convertor it will cost around 200-300 dollars to fix good luck

Loss of power, funny smell coming out the tail pipe (think rotten eggs) and louder exahust.
If the problem is really bad nothing will come out the tail pipe and the will not want to run at all. The exahust backs up in the system and that tends to shut down the motor.

you're top to look someplace else for a greater proper deal. those costs are outrageous! definite, it may be clever to ascertain it out greater thoroughly your self as to the place the exhaust leak is unquestionably coming from. in case you need to climb under the motor vehicle whilst it somewhat is working and positioned your provide up the section that the noise seems to be coming from to do it, you would be conscious of for helpful. A corrosion hollow or leak contained in the outer wall of the converter or muffler does no longer unavoidably advise that the unit is undesirable and desires changing. maximum generally, a normal welding operation or a neat little trick referred to as muffler tape can restoration the situation. in case you do decide on a clean converter, i decide directly to propose Meineke. you will discover an truthful deal there.

No power on acceleration. You'll step on the gas and it will take forever to get up to speed. One way to test for a clogged converter is to unbolt the converter and drive the vehicle. If it makes a difference in power, you know it's clogged.

yep, i've had two cars with this problem. Whenever I was approaching & slowing down for a stop sign it would stall. It's a real pain in the butt and an expensive fix. But hey there's good news: your car may be able to run without it! If you choose to do this your car's fuel mileage will be affected (but not by much). I hardly even noticed. Good luck to you!

I've never heard of one getting clogged, but at a guess I would say your engine would be hesitant and lacking power.
In additional very reluctant to rev high due to excess back pressure.

Loss of power, stalling. If it is actually "Clogged" it will severely restrict exhaust flow. The engine can breathe in but not out.
What are the symptoms you are having?
