What started out as a great little expression has turned into a morbidly-overused juggernaut of impossible dimensions.
I walked down the street. lol
I shut the door. lol
I stuck a hot poker in my eye because I just couln't take it anymore! lol
Am I alone in this perception? Who else has been lol'd once too often?

Joebaby:
It stands for laughed out loud.
It started as a way of enhancing the experience of on-line communication, and became meaningless from overuse.

You're right. All those abbreviations have gotten pretty "old" after being online for over 9 years. It all begins to leave you wondering if the person on the other side is real or not.
And yeah, I do like to type out the whole word so it doesn't appear confusing to anyone.

Haha yeah. I now prefer ROFL. But I have found myself saying LOL in almost every instant message I said. Bad habit. Someone I know actually says lol instead of laughing. That's a little weird. So Yeah.

Yes, that's irritating after some time. I tend to move away from people who overuse such abbreviations. They kinda make the person look stupid.
But I also must add that some time ago I was stuck on such usages too, but I corrected myself!

I sure am! Now instead of even writing "ROFL" we just write "roffle" the way it sounds, just to be stupid. I am also sick of "ppl" and "plz" and all these other crap ways of saying words.
When I was your age...!!! JK. I'm 23. But I also majored in English, where people can spell things out and be understood just the same.
Brats! If you're going to "L O L" do it to yourself and just type "haha" or something else that is NORMAL and HUMAN!

Yes, certainly. "LOL." It seems to me that it has become a space-filler word- the kind of thing that you say when you don't have anything else to say, like "um" or "uh" or, in some cases, "well." Of course, "normal" people don't say "LOL" in actual conversation, (although in highschool I HAVE heard it done,) so it's mainly just a written phenomenon. Who knows, hopefully it'll pass soon enough.
