You watched the movie, right? Even the captain did order more speed, there was that other guy with brown hair and a mustache (I know, not very helpful) who was the one talking at the table saying the Titanic can handle any speed and he suggested that it could go its fastest. I remember he had a name, but can't remember. But since, it was overall the captain's decision, I would say the captain is to blame--which is why he decided to sink with her in the end.

I believe that J. Bruce Ismay may have been at fault for the speed... he did want the Titanic to beat the Olympic's record for crossing the atlantic.

The Marconi wireless did break down for a few hours and the wireless opperators did have a lot of personal messages that they had been paid to send. they were so snowed under in messages that they didn't have time to send a crucial message of ice to the bridge.

Murdoch was on the bridge that night and it was a moonless and calm night, and it was extremely difficult to spot anything in the night as there was no breakwater at the base of any bergs.

there was a missing set of binoculars that no one had seen since southampton.

i have no idea who's at fault for the sinking, however it was a combination of factors; the weather, the speed, the missing binoculars, the wireless breakdown... it was, i believe, either extremely unfortunate, or the act of a greater being. i don't believe in curses, however, no one will ever know what really happened, we can only guess with the facts and the fiction.

I hope this helps. :)

I believe it was Bruce Ismay who is at fault. He was the Managing Director of the White Star Line and he was aboard the Titanic. Competition for Atlantic passengers was fierce and the White Star Line wanted to show that they could make a six-day crossing. To meet this schedule the Titanic could not afford to slow down. It is believed that Ismay put pressure on Captain Smith to maintain the speed of the ship.

Their is someone who could be blamed for not coming to the aid of the Titanic. The final iceberg warning sent to Titanic was from the Californian. Captained by Walter Lord, she had stopped for the night about 19 miles north of Titanic. At around 11.15, Californian's radio operator turned off the radio and went to bed. Sometime after midnight the crew on watch reported seeing rockets being fired into the sky from a big liner. Captain Lord was informed but it was concluded that the ship was having a party. No action was taken by the Californian. If the Californian had turned on the radio she would have heard the distress messages from Titanic and would have been able to reach the ship in time to save all passengers.

The Captain's. It was his fault for speeding and for not paying attention. He put his passenger's lives at stake. Only when he realized that he misjudged the distance from his ship to the ice berg he realized that it was too late.
If the Captain paid attention, then he would have steered clear from it and there would have never been a sinking in the first place.

There are several factors that led to it sinking. There were no binoculars in the crow's nest. Ismay was wanting them to go faster than they should have. Murdoch ( who was at the helm when it hit the berg) should have hit it straight on instead of trying to go around it. Also, a few years ago the steel was analyzed and found to be inferior even for that day, so that could have been a problem as well.

It was really no ones fault. Or maybe everyone's. The titanic's crew was attempting to make one of the fastest times possible crossing the atlantic ocean to America from the United Kingdoms. The icebergs were spotted, but because the speed of the ship was so high they could not turn fully, causing side damage. The ship was made to hold water from a collision in the FRONT of the ship for a fairly long amount of time, but from the side they were unable to do anything but call for help.

I say a mixture of the two. Yes nature did play the main roll in the actual cause of the ship sinking.
But the crew and designers are to blame for the actual death tolls. They assumed that the ship was unsinkable and did not put enough life boats to accomodate the number of people the ship had a capacity to hold, they also had flat propellers and the crew was not trained in rescue procedures properly because they just thought that nothing could sink the ship.
So both elements are at fault.

I'm with Village Idiot, too. There were a lot of things that could have been done differently that could have minimized the loss of life, but the driving factor (pun intended) in the accident was the speed at which they were traveling given the conditions.

If the captain had refused, he probably would have been replaced on the spot by someone else who would have accomodated the desires of the company. With over-riding authority comes ultimate responsibility.

it was the fault of Bruce J Ismay, for badgering the captain, and the Capt. for not steering clear of the ice berg in the first place. and for caving into Bruce's badgering. It was a good thing he went down with the ship, because if he had been saved, he would not have had a career when he got back to England.
