If your computer freezes, how are you posting this question? If it is another computer, then I recommend trying what someone else said here and that is trying to get the computer to boot with Last Known Good Configuration. To get to this screen, you press F8 when the BIOS is dont loading and before you see the Windows XP screen. A system freeze on boot could be a lot of things from a corrupt driver, faulty add-in card, or bad CPU... too may variables. After pressing F8 you will see a list of boot options, simple use the keyboard and move down to Last Known Good and press enter. If the computer refuses to boot here, you may need professional help since you don't have recovery CDs or XP serial. They will require you buy an XP disc, probably an OEM version with the requisit hardware purchase.

Good luck.

If you wouldn't listen to some of the really great advise given by others, then why would anyone think you would even look here?

This solution is a secret, and not to be spread around. It involves some hacking secrets. You get a Knoppix LiveCDrom.

"Where?" you ask. "Simple!", I answer, "you go to http://knopper.net/knoppix and download it. Then burn it to CD, and re-boot!" You will see, on your new desktop, the device "hard drive /hda1" or some such.

That is the Microsoft 'C:' drive. You next go to the book, "100 Knoppix Hacks and tips", by Kyle Rankin, published by O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596=00787-6 and selling Used (really NEW!) on Amazon.com for $7.89 each, including the LiveCDrom!!! go to page 225, and read on Tip#75, the chntpw instructions, as below...

Or, the mini- Knoppix Pocket Reference ISBN0-596-10075-2 PG.56 to change the Administrative password: "Mount the hard drive read/write, Open a console, type:
$ chntpw windows/system32/config/SAM

And, to reset other passwords:
$ chntpw -u username windows/system32/config/SAM

SAM is the Windows file for the password, and may or may not be all capitalized!

Yes, Knoppix LiveCDrom is a Friend in all instances, on all platforms!

if it wont boot up past the windows splash screen, there's not much you can do. the OS is damaged, and needs to be rewritten to the hard drive via the windows CD. if you dont have the cd, dumbass, either buy windows again, get it hot from some buddies of yours, or learn linux. there's probably some programs you can find online which will allow you to boot from cd with that should fix problems in windows OS much like the windows CD would do.

Unfortunately you need to have a Windows disc or some kind of bootable disk to get past that. (To fix it)

However you can hit F8 while your booting in order to enter 'safe mode'. You should be able to get it up and running from there. As to fixing the problem, I'd have to know more information before I could point out the problem.

Try with linux. You can start linux from cd and then from linux fix error in windows. It will be more complicated but you don't have to reinstal windows that way.

You need to find your recovery disk, or be prepared to reinstall windows.
