Why is it that so many people feel this need to be tan? I'm not tan and so many people get on my case about it. I was just wondering what's so great about looking like everybody else and being tan?

It's part and parcel of the pressure to "wear this" or "buy that". I don't conform to anyone else's ideals and I never did, even in high school. I can't fathom why everyone thinks we should all look, dress, act just alike. It's ridiculous. I'm a redhead and what little color I get is from gardening while slathered with sunscreen. As a breast cancer survivor I'm about 25% more likely to get skin cancer than the average person and even making that statement doesn't shut them up! People will say "Oh, well can't you go to a tanning salon?" At that point I usually lose it and shriek, "NO! THOSE ARE BAD FOR YOU TOO!" *L* Oh, well. You can't educate everybody, I guess. I'm pale and proud of it and they'll all just have to kiss my lily-white... *L*

Personally, I have very fair skin and when I was younger I burned all of the time trying to get tan (the highest SPF factor in the 80's was 15!). Now I'm at risk for skin cancer. The lucky thing is, as soon as I smartened up - around age 18, I was very careful about sunscreen, so hopefully I'll be o.k. My husband however has had to have several moles cut off of his back and believe me, it's not pretty. My best friend's father died of melanoma, but not before his arm was amputated. I also have an aquaintance whose wife died of melanoma when she was only in her 30s and she had three young children (very, very sad). So, just be careful and happy with your beautiful fair skin. And appreciate the beautiful skin of those who are darker and tan easily (my sister is a tanner - we're only a year apart, look almost identical, but were always just a different color).

P.S. A bonus of not tanning too much - fewer wrinkles - I'm 40 and barely have a wrinkle on my face! Your friends that get on your case now and bake in the sun will be eating their words and envying you when you're older. (and not all tanned people get that way by baking in the sun either - they just tan from being outside in general).

Its a good thing you don't tan and these are the reasons why you should not tan. 1,Age spots. 2,Wrinkles. 3,Rubber like skin. 4,Zits. 5,Cancer. I give you credit for not tanning in fact super models don't tan and look how pretty thy are. The next time some one tells you to tan let them know why you don't tan and if that doesn't get them off your back then thy deserve all the damage thy are doing to there self.

If you are tanning you are increasing your risk of skin cancer in the future. Also, all the fair girls I know that do a lot of tanning look really old and wrinkled way before their time.

If you were born tan than that's good for you but if you have to fake and bake than you are trying to hurt your self more than help your self. I am mixed and I tan like crazy in the summer to were I am almost Black. But I don't do it intentionally. My arms, face and feet are tan and I have white legs and stomach so I really am mixed! ha-ha
