Everystate in the US has a town called Springfield and that's why the Simpons creators called the town Springfield. No one knows for sure, but I do believe that there is a parrel universe where all the Simpons characters live.

The writers have hinted at it multiple times, and those hints usually contradict past hints. I believe a map shown in one episode once placed the city in the MidWest (but I don't know which ep), but it's never said which state.

they never say. that's the point. they do it on purpose cos there are so many towns called springfield. one time, someone asks and lisa says that if we think about it all the clues are there. But i suppose that's just the writers taunting us.

they never specify, there are Springfields in several midwest states so they keep it elusive kinda like Fez's nationality on "that 70s show"
