BLACK TONGUE

This occurs occasionally. The upper surface of the tongue turns black or brown in color, and in some cases the papillae elongate. This is an unsightly condition but not harmful.

* Did you have beta strep when pg ? Maybe the bacteria caused it.. also there is a possibility that it might be from going to the bathroom inside the womb ?

If you had beta streap when you delivered that will cause the baby to have a black or brown tongue. If the baby's doctor didn't treat the both of you then you guys are still infected and need to bring this up at the next visit to the doctor.

I'm surprised they didn't tell you at the hospital before you left (or at the very least, I would have asked!) Anyway, it could have been from swallowing meconium in the water (the baby's first, tar-looking poop). Or, it could be from a buildup of bacteria in the baby's mouth. I would discuss this with your child's pediatrician on the next visit though, and find out what they think.

No, I do not but did you ask the doctor? I was shocked to see large bruises on my son's butt and back when he was born so I asked the doctor. I had never heard of Mongolian Spots before that but my husband was familiar with them (my hubby is asian and he had them). It was a good thing I asked because what if something was really wrong? What if someone mistook them for abuse? Don't be afraid to ask your doctor about these things.

Well hopefully they did not send your baby home like that because you never know what might be the cause of her tongue looking the way it does.
