Socialism is not a form of government, it is really a form of government intervention in the economy. The opposite is private enterprise.

Western countries are a mix of socialism and capitalism. For instance, Canada has socialized medicine, but even in the States we have social security and welfare. So, socialism/capitalism is really a matter of degree. Even Cuba has some private enterprise.

The track record for socialism is very poor. The countries with the most socialistic economies tend to be the poorest: USSR, Cuba, etc. Compare capitalist with socialist countries: USSR versus USA; West Germany vs East Germany; North Korea vs South Korea; China vs Hong Kong. No contest.

Finally, look at countries that got tired of socialism, and changed things. Ireland and England both lowered taxes, privatized industry, and both are BOOMING right now.

I wish socialism & communism did work, but human nature just does not allow it. We are too selfish, so capitalism (with a few touches of socialism for humanity sake) is the most productive form of economy.

Read Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind. It will answer your question better than any person on here. it is a fantasy book about a wizard, but I am serious. It talks about a socialist society and how it suppresses people into becoming drones. Just read it. It will open your eyes, if nothing else.

Look at the countries with the most powerful economies and you'll see a country that has a capitalist economy. China is Communist, but it uses more of a capitalist system for the economic sector.

Not in my opinion, but then again I've only known and revered Capitalism my whole life. I only know what I saw on television of Russia, China and Cuba. Those people don't seem to be too excited about it. Many of them die trying to get to the US, so there has to be something not so hot about it.

socialism sucks...chronic hand outs make for lazy humans.

people sometimes need help which is okay. it's the people who don't just want help but rather an endless supply of freebies that suck.

Socialism is with its own problems. Anything created will be more flawed than it's creator.
