My tattoo on the arm bled like an ox when I got it done. I know if you drink alcohol before, that would explain it, but I hadn't. It just really stung, especially with the single needle. The 3-pronged shading needle was OK, but still, I had to tell the artist to take a break for me to get some water and a breather. Is this common?

A tattoo will hurt more or less, depending on where are you having it done. For example, getting a tattoo in the stomach will hurt much less that one in the ankle. I'm almost sure that is about how much fat do you have in your skin and if there are a lot of nerves ending in the tattooed zone.
Regarding the needle, single needle hurt much more than multiple needles because when the artist is working with multiple needles, after a while the zone becomes numb and you feel almost nothing.

Yes its definitely common, i have 5 tattoos & 1/2 of them hurt, the other just were annoying, i bleed like a beast on 2 & the other 3, nothing! its crazy, it alll depends what part of your body your getting the ink on. I got on on my foot, it only took 20 minutes, ppl think it must have been the worst 20 mins of my life, wasnt at all!! got one on my lower back, to the side a little, 3 hours long - now that was painful & bled!

Yeah it's is very common. The single needle always hurts more. It hurts even more if you get one done on a bone. Everyone bleeds when they get tattoos, if you bleed alot anyway you will bleed more plus ink will leak out of the tattoo as well.

I didn't think mine hurt too bad. One around my ankle which hardly bled at all, and one on my back hurt a little more but not too bad.

Mine didn't hurt. Did you go to a good tattoo artist? Maybe it was too deep.

My foot oozed a little, felt like someone was carving in my foot with a filet knife. The one on my chest didn't bother me at all.
