In a criminal trial, it is more often called a bail hearing, and is used to determine if a defendant should be detained or released on bail. It can also come up in parole violation hearings.

In a civil trial, it's very rare. The only time court-ordered detention applies in for content, such as refusing to follow a court order. In severe case, the judge can lock someone up until they comply.
