THIS IS NOT A STUPID QUESTION.
BUT SHAME ON THE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR NOT TEACHING THIS IN ELEMENT RY SCHOOL ANY MORE. WASHINGTON D.C. IS NOT IN ANY STATE. THE D.C. STANDS FOR DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. OUR FOREFATHERS IN THEIR WISDOM DID NOT WANT ANY STATE TO BE ABLE TO EXERT INFLUENCE ON OUR NATIONAL CAPITAL AND OUR LAW MAKERS. THAT WAY THERE COULD NOT BE ANY INFLUENCE ON GOVERNMENT TO FAVOR ONE THING OVER ANOTHER

This is an absolutely stupid question. What were you paying attention to in school, your makeup? COME ON!!!! This is why all of the foreigners that come in here call Americans stupid. People who have never been to the US know the answer to this question. I learned this in, I think it was 4th or 5th grade. You should really be ashamed of yourself, you should've been to embarrassed to have asked this question, if you are online you could have easily googled "Washington DC" and easily found the answer.

Actually it is not in a state, it is in the District of Columbia. But when you look at a map it is within the boundries of two states, Viginia and Maryland.

no state, it's a separate jurisdiction cut out of several states as a special federal district - they're angry cause they are not represented by a senator - and it wasn't a stupid question at all!
