The republican party is not right wing
The right wing supports smaller government, and the republicans have increased the size and cost of government immensely
The only area that the republicans lean to the right is the war on terror, and even on that most are only halfheartedly committed

In the 1980s. They saw the success of the Reagan administration, and realized that a strong federal government would be good for advancing their social agenda.
So the neo-cons dropped the fiscal conservative model, and pushed for a centralized power-base to better accomplish the rest of their platform. This took about a decade, leading to GOP control of Congress under a new neo-con model in the 1990s.
It was brilliant political strategy. The problem is, too much too fast caused the system to become unbalanced.

1964 with the Conservative Coalition. The funny thing is that it's founder, Barry Goldwater, in 1981 turned libertarian and denounced the influence of the Christian Right on the party.

I would say it was about 9 years ago and at about same time the left extremists took over the democrats so now both parties are super crazy
