try restarting computer, then if that doesn't help, try switching the two memory sticks, if computer boots nomally and shows that you have 256 than problem solved if it shows 128 then your second memory slot might be faulty, if it doesn't boot and starts beeping, with sounds comming from the onboard speaker, than it means that one of the memory sticks is faulty, the new one that is.
Hope that helps

it all depends on what kind of PC you have. If you have a pretty old PC like a P3 or older you mother board might not read 256MB ram or it requires high density ram which are the ram with chips on both sides. If this is the case then It is also most likely a PC100 ram chip compatible.

There might be several reasons its not reading it properly and using it.

Did you buy the right ram? Not all ram works with all computers.

Did you install it ok?
It can be installed upside down sometimes without you realizing it. That depends on the machine your working with.

Does it spin up when you power on after installng it?
Did you leave your other ram in? Unless it is matching ram it won't work sometimes.

The computer should automatically recognize the memory card. I am guessing the 256mb is the new card, if so- take out the old 128mb card and try it with only the new card. check your computer manual to make sure the card you are trying to put is compatible with your computer.

Ensure that the card is fully seated in it's slot. Also make sure the card is compatible with the system.

It is possible when you put it in, it isn't seated properly. It's not called "plug and pray" for nothing. Make sure your memory is well seated. Turn off the computer before you do this!!!!!! It should recognize it when you reboot.

The PC should automatically recognize them ... if not, try to change there places ... or maybe the RAM is faulty

it may be possible that you may have been sold a 128mb memory with a 256mb sticker on it .put it in someone else computer to see if it says the same thing if it does then its a 128mb.
