OK this really is scary and a very odd problem. my brakes sometimes get very loose and have hardly any stopping power at all. When it happens, i have to push all the way down on the brake, and that barely stops my car. It feels very unsafe. It's only happened twice in about 3000 miles though. The first time it happened i had my grandfather check it out and he couldnt find a single thing. Figured it was just an air bubble. The second time it happened i stopped and went to a midas, and nothing. They couldnt find a dam thing wrong, and the problem just went away i guess. Is it possible for there to have been another air bubble? What do you guys think, ever heard of this?
BTW my car is a 89 ford escort, brand new brake linings, and no leaks in the master cylinder or brake lines.

I don't have to push the brake pedal very hard, but it does go all the way to the floor very easily without much braking power at all

Need to get a new master cylinder. Sound like the master cylinder is leaking internally.
If you don't think it's the master cylinder, get the brake lines flushed with new fluid, but the truth is it sounds like the master cylinder has an internal leak.

First thought would be moisture in the fluid, but that would be every time you braked. Also have the master cylinder and slave cylinder checked for leaks.
If you have drums on the rear, remove the drums and check the wheel cylinders for leaks around the pistons, the outer seal will come off easily as it's only a dust cap.
Then check the calipers for similar leaks, there should be no visable fluid.
If everything is still ok, then it could be the brake servo failing.

Hello.
My best guess is that you have a leak in one of the vacumn hoses to your power brake booster. When this occurs, do you have to push really hard on the pedal to stop (indicating a problem with the brake booster), or does the pedal go all the way to the floor (indicating something else is wrong)?

I don't think it's your antilock brakes. If they fail, they don't reduce the breaks ability to be applied, it just doesn't pump the breaks for you to prevent wheel lock.
From what you've said, it sounds like you have air in your break lines somewhere. I would suggest you (or a shop) drain the system, refill with new fluid, bleed the brakes and top off with new fluid.

like most of the other answers check the master cylinder or atleast start with that than check wheel cylinders and calipers you could have a bad one and not know it you can do it yourself it may take a while to figure it out or take it in to a specialist and have all of these things replaced that is your choice

If the master cylinder is alright then you've got air in the system somewhere. Check the wheel cylinders.

Have you even checked the brake fluid? Or you might have air in the line. A Meineke/carX/Midas type place can help, it's cheaper than a dealership.
