Dwarf hamsters can be kept with a cagemate of the same gender to prevent loneliness, whereas Syrians are extremely territorial and will kill other hamsters in their cage. Roborovski are especially not suitable for children.

Well, it depends on what kind of hamster you want. If you get syrian hamsters better know as teddy bear hamsters you have to keep them separate because they will fight. If you get dwarf hamsters they need company so you should get several. Make sure they are the same gender or you will soon have hundreds on your hands. My experience has shown that male hamsters tend to be sweeter and more laid back. I have never been bitten by a male though I have been by several females.

Everyone thinks their type of hamster is the best hamster. Do what I do when looking....just check out what's in every aquarium at the pet store of your choice and which ever hamster grabs your attention should be the one you take home.

Either a Teddy Bear or Angora for a household with children. Teddy Bear hamsters are very good with kids and rarely bite while Angoras are a little bit more touchy.

Dwarf hamsters are not a good idea as they are very small and sometimes mean when tired.

My sister and I had a succession of pet hamsters when we were kids. We always had the best luck with goldens, they were friendlier and lived the longest. We did have some dwarf and fancy hamsters, they were pretty but they didn't really like to be held so they weren't that much fun.

in my opinion a male black bear. they tend to be the gentlest. learning & caring about them is the key to having the best hamster. making sure they have the things that make them happy - most importantly a big enough cage and or a hamster ball.(use tape on the lid!)

Golden a.k.a Syrian hamsters can be handled better while the other kinds of hamsters tend to be more hyper and jumpy.
