One word: tutorials.

Go to Google and type in "photoshop tutorial" and then whatever you want to do. There is a near infinite number of combinations of things you can do with it, and any tips you will get here are only the tip of the iceberg. The best and easiest way to get started is with tutorials, which will show you what different things can do. The more of this you do, the more you will get the hang of the program, and eventually you'll be the one discovering new techniques and writing tutorials for them.

Enjoy! Photoshop is a great program.

Also try adobe.com

I get emails all the time for classes in my area. I think I signed up. Also I love to get the books with CDs and read and learn. I am self taught on Photoshop and many other programs.

Good sources for books:
Half.com
eBay.com
Powells Books on the web. In my Portland Oregon but they have a great selection, good prices.

I once bought an older Illustrator tutorial that had the cover torn, big deal, and it was half price. Wow!

My favorite! Try to figure out how they 'done' it. I learn new tricks just by trying to sleuth out what was done.
