i bought 2 tiger barbs yesterday and i put them into my tank and one seems to be doing fine but the other is just staying the same spot and is just opening and closing its mouth, is this something to be worried about or is it just normal?

sometimes it takes fish a couple of days to adjust to the pH levels and ammonia levels in your tank.

he might also be having swim bladder disease, whcih is caused by bacteria, water chemistry problems, or genetics. try feeding your fish food that sinks to the bottom to avoid this b/c sometimes feeding floating food causes them to gulp too much air when eating. some people also say that feeding your fish a frozen pea helps to reduce the amount of air in your fish and maintains buoyancy.

if the problem seems to be getting worse or changing, take your fish to the vet!

This is a bad, very bad sign, that means that you're unlucky because that will mean that one will be dying quickly. You should go to a pet store to buy a medication for that particular fish.YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE THAT FISH OUT!! Also, here are some tips for buying fish:
(1)Find fish that swim around, and doesn't sit around or stays in the back
(2)Get a fish that doesn't seem to have parasites and the belly isn't very white, if it is, that means that it's stomach has a problem
(3)Don't get a fish who is upside down or likes swimming upside down.
(4)DON'T BUY FISH FROM A TANK THAT CONTAINS DEAD SPECIMENS!!
(5)Seems very naughty.

if it eats the food that you drop, then its fine. but it might be in shock from the relocation. just give it a little time. if it was dieing, you would know it (it would fight to stay up-right and the current of the circulation of the tank would be moving it around) i have a bala shark that does the same as you had described. i asked a pet store worker and they said it was to keep from moving too much. so id say your fish is just a little scared. get a fake/real plant to put in it and possibly raise the water temp a few degrees.
hope it works out for you.

Make sure you have enough Air circulating through you tank. An air wand will help. Or you may want to put some stress coat in the water. He is just freaked out. Did you float him for a while first?

sounds like your fish is stressed, very common with tigers barbs in a new tank, try puttingin some stres zyme or similiar product that replenishes the fishes slime coat, if possible kepp it in a dark place nad dont feed for a day

Is the temperature okay? The fish may have found a spot it especially likes. Even fish tanks have warm and cool spots.

I would check your ammonia level. Try putting in some ACE and see how he responds. He might not be able to breathe the water.
