It's often impaired venous return because the baby is compressing your large veins.

Try reducing salt, keeping your feet up and DON'T lay on your back.

Edema (swelling) of the lower extremities (legs, feet, ankles) is common in late pregnancy. It is usually caused from decreased circulation and increased weight to the legs. The best thing you can do is to keep your feet elevated as much as possible. It is also a very good idea to keep watch on your blood pressure. If your face, hands and/or arms begin to swell, then you need to contact your doctor. Good Luck and enjoy your new baby.

That you are probably dehydrated. May sound weird, but the body will hold onto water when it thinks it may not get as much as it needs - so your ankles swell. I had 2 kids and NO swelling at all. I drank 9 - 12 eight ounce glasses of water a day. Also, avoid the salt as stated above.

That you need to sit down put your feet up and relax. You wont really have time to once the baby arrives. I think its just from putting alot more weight on your feet/ankles then they are used to. But im not a doctor only a mother that went thru the same thing.

perfectly natural. My feet and ankles look like sausages! Just make sure you don't have high blood pressure. Take time to relax and elevate your legs.
