It is a slow drip and I can smell the fumes while driving. What could be causing this?

I'm pretty sure that is where your fuel filter is located, easy fix, but make sure your lines are ok too, most likely the filter has rotted away from not servicing, if leak gets severe enough, the car wont run, and with the price of gas........

If you are a lady driving this car and you have kids in the cars then this CAUTION should be a wake up call to do the following IMMEDIATELY!

I see too many car fires that could have been prevented!

Take your car into the nearest REPUTABLE repair shop, FORD or otherwise, and have them not only find the leak under your WATCHFUL EYE and actually show it to you, but have them give you a written fix for it also.

If you wish to shop for a cheaper estimate that is fine as at least you'll know HOW SEVERE it is and what is causing it.

I know FORD had some issues with leaking FUEL INJECTOR seals on certain model cars and trucks, but your TAURUS wasn't affected by this RECALL. That problem was up front at the engine and could be a VERY REAL FIRE POTENTIAL! It that is the problem and leaky fuel is following the fuel line back towards the tank then this is nothing to take lightly! This is SERIOUS! Get it fixed NOW!!

A 1999 TAURUS does not have any gas tank related problems unless it was under a RECALL and I could find NO RECALLS on your auto year! That's a good thing.

If your tank straps are loose and the tank has rubbed a hole in the tank then you need to be AWARE of that ASAP so don't take this gas leak too lightly by any means!!

Get it checked immediately!

Hi.

Is it a constant drip, and not just within a few hours after you fill up? Modern cars have crazy-complicated vapor recovery systems to prevent fuel evaporation, and they don't appreciate being overfilled at all.

If that's not it, then you get to do some sleuthing. A couple of likely places it could leak are...

1. The fuel filter. I had an older Topaz (The taurus cousin) with a coffee-cup sized fuel filter mounted under the car about where you describe. the fittings that hold it in place are held in with little plastic clips, and it could be that your filter has developed a hole, or the lines are leaking. If you are really lucky, you can push the line back on the filter and it will fix it.

2. The fuel lines. Probably not these.. Most of them are metal, and they tuck them up and out of the way. If it does leak, then it's probably going to be at where the rubber lines meet the metal ones. Replacement lines with the special o-ring-clip and fitting are probably a dealer or junkyard item.

3. The fuel pump connections. These are under the back seat cushion. This is really unlikely, or the gas smell would have rendered you unconscious long ago.

If you find out it's number 2, or you suspect number 3, you'll have to remove the back seat to check or change the line. To remove the back seat, grasp the front edge and push down and to the rear of the car. This should release the hooks and allow the back seat cushion (base) to come out.

Loose fitting or an abrasion. Could be something is rubbing against the tank and has worn a hole through it. Also could have been caused by something you ran over. Better get it checked right away. You don't want the tank to catch fire. And the gas is spraying back all over the bottom of the car when you drive. Can you say "Roman Candle"?

Sounds like an "O" ring in the fuel line either from a hardline to flexible line connection, or from the fuel filter fittings.

Gas tank rusted out.
You could get another gas tank from junk yard...but it's not for the unexperienced wrencher.
Somewtimes you can pull it down and patch with JB weld or somthing of that sort.
Gas Tank must be pulled to find out.

since its a taurus you probably hit the tank a lot on bumps or on the driveway
making a hole

sounds like either a rubber or metal fuel line see if you can pinpoint which then replace it there will be metal and rubber lines in that area.
