In the old days before most cars had automatic transmissions, you were supposed to allow some room in case the car ahead rolled backward a bit when he started moving again. Now, it is still a good idea if it is hot. Why let the car ahead of you pump his hot exhaust directly into your engine?

Lots of reasons why people would like to put space between themselves and the car in front of them.
If you notice cars are keeping a distance from you, then ask yourself the following questions..
1. Do I stink? Maybe that catalytic converter has crapped out and now I am crapping a trial of toxin fumes.
2. Am I paranoid? Does the car behind me know something that I dont?
3. Have I been driving safely? Perhaps you have been swerving and he is afraid that you will put it in reverse in error
4. Do I look safe? Lets face it, no one wants to get pinned in. Always leave space to manuever.
5. Do I have a bumper sticker that says IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THEN YOUR TOO D*A*M*N CLOSE
6. Did i pull up too close to the intersection and the car is giving way to a cross walk?

I always give myself an out, just in case. Just enough to maneuver though.
Whats the big deal? Lemme guess, you are one of those people standing on my heels in line for a Disneyland ride, right?

You NEVER know when one of those nut job Hezbollah (aka D*ckheads) maybe be in front of you. Better safe than sorry.

Even worse are the fools who stop 3-4 carlengths back from the line at the light and they are the first one there! WTF is THAT all about?
If we were meant to go slow, we'd still be on horses!!!
