I bought a astra 2001 x reg. When i bought it, it was really smooth! i think i might be partly to blame for this but i was parking in the drive way and the kerb was not lowered. I am now not parking in the driveway and have been to my local bp to put some pressure in the tyres. However for some reason i feel the steering is heavy and driving not smooth. Do you think there might be a problem or is it just that the tyres need changing. I have had so many problems with my previous i really don`t need anymore. Your help will be very appreciated, i am so glad that yahoo answers was invented.
Thank u x

well, it is fairly new still, but first thought would be the power steering fluid- check the level, or have the fluid replaced with new, second is tyres- but you've looked at this... third is the track rod ends that may be worn.... bit unusual on x reg car but it is an astra so it may be possible. what's the mileage ? if high, could be the trackrod ends.... good luck.

what engine size is it?
a friend had one, the 2.2 it has a know fault, vauxhall don't even know why it happens, he lost all steering and 60 miles an hour, for some reason the fault is only on the 2.2 not on any of the other engine sizes, its a fault with the steering pump, a piece shears off. that would account for the steering prob. the poor accel, could be a a pulley issue, or the engine may need a clean, try a fuel additive to clean out the injectors, and give it a service, that may help, check that the oil is smooth, that it has no grainy bits in it, that mean serious engine probs, bit in the oil

electronic pump controls the power steering on your car, its hidden down the back right of the engine as you look at it and a bit of a pain to refill. Check the level first.
Sometimes the pump needs to be unplugged and reconnected and the steering will work again.
as for the car not picking up, is the rev counter climbing but the car isnt going any quicker?
if its a diesel then air flow meters are favourite, makes the car feel as though the turbo isnt working and they also suffer fuel pump faults.

Have the tires looked at and have the steering looked at for ball joints looked at. And the speed thing could be that the engine has sludge in the oil pan which spreading to the upper block. And have trans looked at for speed issue. And always check your fluid levels and tire pressure weekly.
This stuff happens to me all the time.

It could be something simple like the injectors needing cleaned. You can buy bottles of injection fluid from car accessory shops and they're just a few quid so it's definately worth trying. Maybe checking to see if it needs new spark plugs, or an air and oil filter.

Check the power steering fluid level. If it is low fill it to the line and if it goes low again you have a leaky pump.

front end alignmenmt(if some distance sufficient off, - will influence "feeling" of guidance. additionally low front tires, (might influence acceleration extremely too).A slipping stress belt to ability guidance pump- you need to hear "squeal thouth" (in case you have P.S.) - ought to decelerate bypass with the aid of guidance field, - (making guidance extra artwork), - The belt ought to be broke (assume you checked that)-then you definately've "powerless guidance", - that's an outstanding purchase extra durable than in vehicle without it in first place! some smaller vehicles do not even use p.s.-- it provides beter feeling of street, (and expenses much less) yet isn't hardship-free to steer whilst shifting very slowly! and of direction possibly you have much less ability being developed in engine in first place (the affecting "improve up like it used to" section). So examine to be sure that each and every thing is opearing exact on the engine itself! additionally having all your tires at decrease stress than they're meant to be will decelerate acceleration too. besides as ruining or donning the tires improperly, requiring replace extra many times,-( over inflating them additionally will placed on tires extra directly, or perhaps blow them out if way intense stress used!)

If it's been thumping on and off the curb you might want to check the wheel alignment... though I confess to being very far from a mechanic...

Check the air pressure is correct, it sounds like you need more air in. if it's not that then get it serviced and flushed through...you'll be amazed at the difference.
