Help! My computer is running very slow, perhaps there is a problem, but I don't know what is it. Could shut down any moment, some programs especially Pinnacle Studio 9 - the window appear which telling me that the program has encoured a problem therefore need to be closed, etc. In my mind there seems to be a problem definetly, maybe a virus too- Windows Defender (Beta2) keep telling me that "No unwanted or harmful software detected. Your computer is running normally." What? Is that normal? I don't think so. Any ideas, what can I do, please practical sugestions.

the best plan of action in a situation like this is to do a complete format and re-install windows
i say this as the same problem was happening to me and as much as you run error checks and security tools like anti spy programs ,the results will still come back clear, and as you said windows defender is reporting all clear
what happens with windows after a while it starts to become slower due to the amount of programs and just general usage, the registry becomes fragmented and basically the whole operating system gets sluggish
one bit of good news is the error messages are the softwares problem and not windows, but its still annoying as it shouldnt happen in the 1st place
after a re-install ,you will find xp much nicer to use,and also you should try to buy some more memory,as this will aid smooth running of the system,a 256mb ddr module can be bought for £20 on the web and can make a big difference to the overall computer performance
to scan your system for the right memory module go to crucial.com(http://www.crucial.com/),this will tell you the correct module and will also give you the option to buy it from crucial, they are quite reasonable
good luck

6 things to keep your computer clean, and running correctly

1) a) Download Avast antivirus
b) Update definitions (done automatically)
c) Turn off memory scanning
right click the "a" icon in the task bar>Program settings>
under common uncheck "test memory during application
start up" (if you leave this option checked then your
computer will be very slow when starting new applications)
c) Perform a full scan

2) a) Download SpyBot search & destroy
b) Update definitions
c) Perform a full scan

3) a) Download Lavasoft Adaware
b) Update definitions
c) Perform a full scan

4) Update windows

Avast, Spybot search & destroy and Adaware are all freeware

Window defender is a bit of junk, useless, remove it.
anyone who relies on Window defender should think again, my computer had 5 Trojan's on it & Window defender keep telling me that "No unwanted or harmful software detected.
That's when i removed it as a waste of space.

Hope it help's.

Your PC could be low on memory, or the disk could be badly fragmented. But it does sound like a virus. Try visiting the site below.

Well windows defender is crap.

You need a real thing..try NOD 32 or Kaspersky antivirus. They can check for spyware, mallware, viruses.. and also actively protect your PC. So that no more viruses infect you...you do need to update them frequently.

You've got a virus which is running in the background. Go buy the McAfee software (you can buy online) to cleanse your hard drive.

Get a good spyware programme and do regular disc clean ups to keep your computer less sluggish.

I'd recommend getting, Antivir XP, Adaware and Spybot. They're all free and you should just run them as soon as you download them.
