for the same reason YOU call crisp, chips. they're 2 different countries!!!!!!!!! if you say, "crisps" in the US, we'll have NO idea what your talking about.
To you guys in the UK, why do you call chips, french fries?.......if you say 'chips' here, we'll think your talking about what you know as crisps.
man these words are fun.
buscuit - cookie
boot- trunk of a car
CHIPS- FRENCH FRIES
CRISPS- POTATO CHIPS

Why do you call erasers rubbers?

Why do we call football soccer?

Is "f-g" a cigarette or a slur?

Is turkey a country or a bird?

It might have to do with the fact that CHIPS were invented in America.

The real question is why everybody else calls them by the wrong name.

Why do you freaking foreigners call a Vacation "Holiday"?

A holiday is an observed day like 4th of July......when we broke free from you freaking Brits.

maybe its because they're DIFFERENT to us.
its a different part of the world
with a different culture.
so somethings will be ....different.
thats why travel broadens the mind so you have to be careful

I wonder are they annoyed that we call chips crisps?
I doubt it..
