I have to say from experience that The Clash Singles Anthology is a pretty good place to start cribbing a song list, and a nice overview of all the albums. I put it on one night when my sis (who's sadly ignorant about these things) was over for a visit, and she went nuts for it. It definitely made her want to go out and buy some cds, which, after all, is the point.

The track listing of the album is:

White Riot
Remote Control
Complete Control
Clash City Rockers
(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
Tommy Gun
English Civil War
I Fought The Law
London Calling
Train In Vain
Bankrobber
The Call Up
Hitsville UK
The Magnificent Seven
This Is Radio Clash
Know Your Rights
Rock The Casbah
Should I Stay Or Should I Go

I personally would drop The Call Up, Remote Control and Bankrobber and add Career Opportunities, Safe European Home, Rudie Can't Fail and Police On My Back. Not that they're bad songs, but I want an upbeat vibe for an introductory compilation.

I might even lose Hitsville (sorry Mick) in favor of Sound of Sinners or Straight To Hell, just because you don't want to be explaining about Mick's then-girlfriend singing lead with a fake Brit accent.

If your friend has truly never heard the big hits like Train, Casbah & Stay or Go, I think they have to be on there, as much as I wouldn't count them among my favorites.

"Combat Rock". I know people say this is the "sell-out" album, but it has some amazing songs on it.

"London Calling" is excellent, but "The Clash" is my second favorite album. The Clash is seriously my favorite punk band and definitely one of my favorite bands period.

My favorite song is "Know Your Rights". This song is still relevant today.

Some suggestions for songs:

This is Radio Clash
Rudie Can't Fail
Hateful
White Riot (ironic since I'm black, but a great song)
I fought the law
London Calling
Train in Vain
Revolution Rock (awesome song, def. underrated in my book)
Sean Flynn
Straight to Hell
Jimmy Jazz
The Right Profile

I guess I like more songs off of London Calling, but the vibe of The Clash and Combat Rock. Then again Sandinista is some people's fav., ya know?

Anything from London Calling...
Faves from that one are..Death or Glory, Lost in the supermarket, Hateful, it's all good....

First Album:
Janie Jones
Police & Theives
I'm So Bored With The USA
Career Opportunities

Second Album:
Stay Free

Rock the Kasbah is good, but they started to decline by then....

The Clash are one of the greatest Rock bands ever.
My opinion, but I am not alone.

JOE STRUMMER - Revolutionalry Genius on a par with John Lennon and Bob Marley.
