Titanic sunk because it hit the iceberg with its side. That cause a major opening on the ship's body. If it had only hit the iceberg with its nose there will be only limited damage!

New research indicates the ship foundered after suffering six narrow gashes, not one large one, as thought. Computer calculations, help reveal the detailed stages:
* When the Titanic struck the iceberg, six of its 16 watertight compartments were damaged. The ship started taking on water in the bow through openings about 20 feet below the water line.
* As the liner nosed down, water flooded compartments one after another and the ship's stern began rising out of the water.
* sinking As the stern rose ever higher, the stress amidships was more than the vessel could bear. It broke apart just forward of the third funnel. The bow began to sink.
* With the bow gone, the stern temporarily settled back to nearly level. The stern then rapidly flooded and rose out of the water, pivoting on the surface. It held that vertical position about a minute and then slowly slipped beneath the surface.
* The bow section sank gently and plowed into the mud. The stern's impact was more traumatic: when it hit bottom, it buried itself some 50 feet, crumpling the steel hull.

Here's some interesting trivia about that. It hit the iceberg around 11 p.m. on the 14th of April, 1912, and it sank three hours later, at 2 a.m. on the 15th.
My father was born on 24 September 1911, and my mother was born on 4 November 1912.
April 1912 is halfway between September 1911 and November 1912. And the 14th is halfway between the 4th and the 24th.
But 1912 was a leap year, which added one extra day.
So it turns out that exactly halfway between my father's and mother's birthdays, it was midnight on 15 April 1912 -- after Titanic had hit the iceberg, but before it sank.
Some coincidence!

The titanic sank when it hit an iceburg in the Atlantic. They didnt have where to go, and there was not enough boats for everyone, so many people died.
