Was the Jeep lifted with either a body kit or a transfer case drop? You may notice spacer bars underneath the body to the transmission about a inch thick. If the vehicle was lifted, the shifter often banged against the cutout in fourth gear. Easy problem to fix, notch the sheet metal and/or move the center console box.
Check your transmission fluid and change if necessary. Put your transfer case in neutral at a stopped position with the motor running. Run through all of the gears in the transmission and listen for unusual sounds. Jeep used a Peugeot transmission that year with the 4.2. That transmission was prone to problems.

I had the same problem w/a car and eventually the tranny went out on me, if I were you I would take it in and get it checked out, you definately don't want it to go out on you on the highway. Also you may need tranny fluid I would check that first. Remember that the tranny is a very expensive part and if it goes out on you you will have to fork out a lot of money.

Sounds like your brass locker rings are getting hot and locking down. If I was you, I'd go ahead as soon as possible and have it fixed or you'll have more problems than that in the near future.

You probably need to change the fluid (oil) in the tranny. If it's never been changed it will lose it's viscocity and make shifitng difficult.
