DVD is Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc.
CD is a Compact Disc
Both look alike but their capacities vary. CD holds about 700MB whereas a DVD holds 7 times more: 4700MB. Dual layer DVDs (expensives ones) can hold 14 times a CD.
CDs are normally used to store files, music and sometimes movies in low quality.
DVDs were earlier used for movies, but now used for files and everything.

You can write files onto a blank CD (normally called burning a CD) with a CD Writer drive (CDRW)
A DVD Writer writes onto both DVDs and CDs

DVD = Digital Video Disc
CD = Compact disc

A CD works much like vinyl, with a series of ripples burnt into the surface, very compactly. hence compact CD. This is also known as an analogue method.

A DVD records the data as 0's and 1's the same as computer information, and requires intelligence to read the disc.
This is a digital method.

A CD will hold 750Mb, and a DVD will hold 4Gb+ depending on layers.
