In America schools tend to be seen by most kids as a place where you go to make friends and gain popularity. Kids here don't seem to eager to learn. I have heard from many of my friends that their parents don't really care about the grades as long as their child is happy and "normal"(by which they mean that their kid needs to be a brat, have a ton of boyfriends and talk back to the very parents who work so hard to keep them happy). My parents on the other hand are traditional and strict Bengali parents so they expect my grades to always be perfect. Also it's not their job to make me happy. It's the other way around since they are older and need to be respected. I America most parents are not strict enough and so their children think that it's OK to not have perfect grades or learn anything. Education in America is also very bad. Lately, teachers seem to think that sitting around in a circle and talking about symbolism in Huckleberry Finn is great education. That's why kids these days don't seem to know anything and all they can do is talk. Modern education in America is horrible and is part of the reason why kids in America can't spell things correctly and can't do a lot of other things as well. In Asia where I come from education is taken seriously but to American kids it seems like a joke. American society and education both need to improve their ways or else American kids will keep getting dumber each generation.

Spelling is very difficult especially in 'American" because we have so many other languages included besides just English words. We also create many words by combinding two or more words or connected ideas or descriptions.
Sir names are just the way who ever is using it for a title wants to spell it, be it a name from another country or a shorted name taken when they came to this country, just to make things simple.
Don't feel frustrated or dumb because spelling is just a learned subject so we can all understand each other. Can you imaging if they decided to change spelling so it was easier and always the same from now on? We could not go back and read and understand what was written.
Phonics and pronunciation are all part of spelling too.
So just learn the words you use the most and use a reference book to get meaning out of words you haven't met before.
Oh, and spell check--I think God got tired of poor spelling and blessed us with gift.

I agree with newsblews about the laziness. I don't see what's so difficult about clicking the spell check. I think the horrific lack of grammar skills may be a reflection of modern education, though.

No, I really think it's a side effect of 'spell-checker' and the unwillingness to use it. In other words, it's the computer generation, not the lack of education.

Quite possibly, yes. There seems to be far too many young people (early teens) on Yahoo! Answers that do not know proper spelling or grammer.

(I'm 32 and still have trouble with all the rules from English class! :) )

Sometimes it can be, but more than likely it is a reflection upon the acceptance of laziness in our society. Think about it. Most people can spell the word 'you', yet they insist upon using its one letter counterpart.

No, it's either refusal to use the available "spell check" or just not caring enough to use it.

No, I think it's thanks to the wonderful world of AIM (instant messenger.) It has completely changed the way people, not just kids do business. I swear to god TTYL will replace goodbye soon enough.
