Japan had no intention of surrender, we where losing thousands of men a day fighting an enemy with suicidal intentions. We had a weapon and where obligated to use it. I personally think we should have nuked Japanese military installations first instead of cities, if that didn't get their surrender, then we could have moved on to more desperate targets. Today, the USA is much more sensitive to civilian casualties.

The estimates, at the time, to invade Japan (continuing with conventional warfare) would cost 1M+ american casualties and 20M+ Japanese injured and dead. In addition there may have been some knowledge of Japanese experiments with biological weapons.
I think most countries feel that way about having their homeland bombed, when the Doolittle raid bombed Japan in 1942, the Japanese killed most of the captured american flyers for insulting the Japanese people. This in spite of what they were doing in China, Indochina, and other parts of Southeast Asia.

It was done mostly out of desperation to end the war. Also no one had seen what it could do, I think the "morbid curiosity" factor was also a reason. To see what would actually happen. It was a surprise to everyone the devastaion it caused....

No. An invasion of Japan would have cost at least a million lives.

Do you think it was just for the Japanese to rape, torture, and kill the people of China, Korea, and the Philippines? They got what they deserved. The Japs weren't innocent victims of WW2.

They started it. We ended it. At a big cost. It's called war, it was justifiable.
