The temple of Kailashnath is the oldest temple of Kanchee as well as the whole of South India. On the request of the queen, king Raisingh built it in 700 AD to the east of town. The front portion having been added by his son Raja Mahendra Barman III later on. Surrounding the presiding god Shiva there are 58 divinities with Devi Durga on throne and Vishnu among them. Beside the main temple you may see the dance competi­tion between Shiva and his wife Parvati. The judges are Brahma and Vishnu. The sculp­ture is exquisite. Various war-like feats of the Pahlava rulers are also depicted in bas-relief style on the temple walls.
