They win the world series every 5 years or so, then break up the team and start over. Why not keep a championship team together? Any Marlins fans out there who can explain?

I think it's just their approach to building a winner on a team that can't continually afford a $100-150 million payroll.

Some teams, like the Twins, take the approach of retooling every year through good drafts, savvy trades, and the occasional foray into the free agent market. The Marlins, though, are trying to win by building a strong, young team, then finding the parts they need to put that group over the top. Their problem comes afterward when their young guys (like Burnett and Beckett in the past, or Cabrera and their young pitchers in the future) come due for big paydays.

It's not really anything new, either. If you look at Connie Mack's tenure with the A's, you'll find huge peaks and valleys because he would build a great team, then sell it off. So you'd have a time with guys like Eddie Collins, Home Run Baker and Eddie Plan, then some lean years, then a group with Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Cochrane.

To be honest, as a Blue Jays fan I rather envy the Marlins' approach. You get some lean years, but at least their are championships!

Yes, in 1997 The Florida Marlins did win the World Series.

David Dombrowski was the mastermind behind that one (GM), just as he is the mastermind behind The 2006 Detroit Tigers.

JIm Leyland was the manager of the 1997 World Champions Marlins, just as he is the manager of The 2006 Detroit Tigers.

In 2003 when The Marlins won another World Series, Ivan Rodriguez was thier catcher, as he is now catching for the 2006 Detroit Tigers.

History does have a way of repeating itself.

I'm from miami, the problem is that we wont get a stadium currently playing at dolphins stadium home to our football team. well the first time we had those blockbuster sale, trades after our first world series win our owner was an idiot it was his fault. then when we won our second WS we actually got carlos delgado, lo duca and players like todd jones and got rid of povano and pudge. Considering we had that fire sale we are actually pretty good 5.5 gb in the wild card chase wit the lowest payroll in the majors (arod makes more money than the entire marlins team.) but when we had that fire sale our scouts (the best in the majors) made sure we got real good prospects. im sure we are the youngest team. Lead by d-will and cabrera. im sure if they stay or hopefully this year we could give a good run in the playoffs. Giardi is doin a decent job
I hope they stay

They must be doing it right. In Cleveland, we have been waiting 58 years for a World Series title. Florida one a title in like 5 years, broke up the team, won another title, broke up the team again, and are on the right track for another one. Sounds like they know what they are doing.

I agree with Craig S. Twins have the right approach. Build your team with some trades but start with the farm system.

Build for the future.

Kansas City Royals owners did this in the 70's and 80's and did very well with it.

I guess they got cheap this year. I heard they were going to move to another stadium but I doubt it would make them play better. Hard to believe it was the same team that won the 2003 WS

It's not that they don't want to keep everybody together. It's just the fact that they don't have the money to pay everybody. It's all about the payroll.

but look their stadium is EMPTY! there doing something wrong with their approach to baseball! Its like have a movie theatre and showing a movie no one ever heard of. They dont need to spend 200 million but spend a little..
