One has to understand what is normal speech and language development in order to identify what is not normal in one's speech. This is how a parent or teacher might sense something is wrong with a child's speech but it is the experts in the end that give the diagnosis of a given speech problem.
These are just a few causes:
#Speech delays in young children may indicate oral-motor problems (inefficient communication in the areas of the brain responsible for speech production). The child finds difficulty using the lips, tongue, and jaw to produce speech sounds.
#Speech problems can show up after an accident or head injury.
# Speech problems can occur from illness or disease when speech suddenly becomes garbled, slurred, thickened or unclear.
According to speech pathologist Daniel Zwitman speech is the most complex function of the human brain. He states: "In order to just say 'ahhh,' 76 muscles have to work in unison," he explains. "With all the interrelationships in communication, it's easy to see how it can break down."

You will hear it when the person speaks or pronounces some words. You are able to identify if the person has a lisp, cannot pronounce certain blends or clusters etc. You can also pick it up if the person is doing oral reading.
